What does it mean to be one of God’s soldiers? We are called to being a warrior of God. To fight for his kingdom, but sometimes we don’t spend enough time thinking about what it means to fight for God or why this is considered to be a fight, to begin with. if you have not realized it yet, there is a lot of growing opposition to Chrisitan values. It used to be a good thing to be a Chrisitan, and now it’s a bad thing. Some here say that you are a believer and that you are oppressive of different people groups. It means to them that you serve a God who is violent and promotes genocide.
You have to understand that this battle is not going anywhere.
2 Timothy 3: 1-9 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
As time goes on, the lawlessness that you see will only increase. People will want to follow their own sinful hearts, and they will not want to submit to anything. They will not submit to God, leaders, parents, or anyone else. That means that if you are going to stand up for biblical truth, you better be ready for a fight.
Are You Ready to Be Persectured For Your Faith?
God loves us so much that he sent his one and only son Jesus to live a perfect life on this earth, and we killed him on the cross. God was so good that he raised him from the dead three days later, proving that he was who he said he was. For those who believe in him, you will have eternal life and many other gifts through him.
Here is the problem, that if you follow Christ, you will suffer like him? The Apostle Paul spent a lot of time in jail, and all the Apostles outside of John were killed for their faith. They believed in what Jesus did so much that they were willing to die for it. Are you willing to do the same?
To be a warrior of God means taking a stand for Jesus no matter what it will cost you. It may cost you your freedom, it may cost you money, and at worst, it may cost you your life. The thing is that Jesus beat death, so you don’t have to fear it as most people do.
A Warrior of God Will Give Up Comforts
John 16:22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
Our comfort and peace come through Jesus Christ. Not through vacations, video games, and other things of this world. It does not mean that those things are bad, but we can become locked in trying to make our world as comfortable as possible.
Think about all the people who chose to follow and obey God. Their lives and journies were often far from cozy. Jonah was told to go to Nineveh and get them to repent for their evil ways, and he tried to run. God made his life uncomfortable immediately. He had to go and do the thing that he did not want to do.
You see this time and time again with so many people following Jesus. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus tells his disciples that they have to deny themselves and take their cross to follow him. No one wants to do that because it’s uncomfortable. You can no longer be the god of your life. You have to submit to the one true God, the father, and be ready to suffer like Christ.
A Warrior of God is a Good Soldier of Jesus
2 Timothy 2: 1-7 You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, 2 and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. 3 Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. 4 No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. 5 An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. 6 It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. 7 Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.
Be Ready to Rebuke and Be Hated
One of the biggest knocks people have of Christians is that they judge when the Bible says not to judge. In Matthew 7, what it actually says is to remove the speck from your own eye first, and then you can judge. We should judge, and we all do judge people, and it’s not always from a bad place. We judge behavior because we want to see people do better sometimes. But, unfortunately, all rebuke is taken as a negative in our current society. We want to leave people to do whatever they want.
2 Timothy 4:1-5 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
We have to be ready as Good soldiers of Jesus Christ to know the word and share it with others. We have to tell the truth even if others don’t like the truth. We have to tell them what is really going on! We have to encourage others to keep marching forward for his kingdom, but we need to rebuke those who are not. No matter how friendly or loving you are, this will not always be taken well.
Remember That The Path is Narrow
Matthew 7: 13-14 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
When you’re a warrior for God, you understand that the path to destruction is an easy path to end up on. You don’t have to do much work to end up on the path because it’s easy. But to have life through Christ the way is narrow, and not many will walk that path. So it’s not easy to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
A Good Warrior is Equipped With The Whole Armor of God
Ephesians 6: 10-20
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.
A good warrior of God understands that this battle is happening on a different level. Many people think that the battle is just a flesh battle, but it really goes much deeper. Battles are happening on a spiritual level. The only way to fight these spiritual forces is with the armor of God.
- Righteousness through our perfect creator
- Readiness through the Gospel and the peace it brings
- The Holy Spirit
- The Word of God
You have to fight against things that go against God using the tools that God has given us. You can’t go into a spiritual fight without prayer, the word of God, and the Holy Spirit. You need to have Jesus with you every step of the way when you enter into these battles.
You are called to be a warrior of God! God loved you so much that he pursued you and sent his only son to die for you. When you love something, you fight for it, and if you love Jesus, you will want to defend him.
