He is Greater Than I is Fundamental for Christians – John 3:30

By lan Warner

Culturally the world is constantly trying to tell people that you are great! Many people even believe that they themselves are God without giving any credit to Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

There is a scene in the Gospels where the disciples argue with themselves about who is the greatest amongst them. In John 13, Jesus then washes the disciple’s feet to make the point that the greatest is the one who serves. He is greater than I in how to live out your walk with Jesus.

If you see yourself as greater than God, then you take the place of God. You make your own rules and laws, and you decide what is good and bad. Though that might sound good to some of you, the truth is that if you are God and are not perfect, what is the point? If you are God and you know for a fact that people came before you, then what did those people live by?

Why is He Greater Than I?

God is the creator of the universe, and he is loving, faithful, righteous, holy, and sovereign. We are not these things even though we like to think we are. Many people will say that they love all of the time, but God is the originator of love by what he did with his son Jesus Christ (1 John 4).

God loves us so much that he wanted us to reconcile with him even though we were sinners. So God sacrificed his son and sent the word to the earth as flesh, and he lived with no sin, yet sin killed him on the cross. Three days later, God raised Jesus from the dead, proving that he wad God because he is the only person to beat death, and those who believe in him get to beat death as well.

We need to get back to worshipping the creator, not the creature. Think about this for a second. We will worship a musician, athlete, or movie star but not the God that made them. We will worship books and places but not the wonderful God that made those things.

Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
The book of Matthew is sending a very clear message in Chapter 10. Too many people fear humans that can harm only their bodies but have no control over what happens to their spirit. But God can destroy both your body and your soul. God can send your body and soul to hell for eternity.
A lot of people think of Christianity as being fear-based but it’s not at all. Its love based. God loves us so much that despite being sinners and that we insist on going against his ways, he still loves us.
Enough that he was willing to send his only son to earth to completely fulfill the Law in the flesh and die for our sins so that we would not have to. God raised Jesus up from the dead three days later and proved that he was who he always said he was.
For all who believe that Jesus is Lord and that God raised him from the dead, you get to be saved. Regardless of your sin or what has disconnected you from God. When it’s time to enter heaven you will be presented without spot or wrinkle like Jesus.

He is Greater Than I and Know That He is a Jealous God

Exodus 34:14 “Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”
An idol is anything that you put above God. God hates idols because it’s a sin! Putting anything above God is ridiculous because it’s another form of worship of creatures over the creator. God is after our hearts; that is what matters most to him.
Think about how it would feel to create something with a certain purpose, and it decides to be something totally different. It’s hard to imagine this because we are not God. But imagine you buy a cat to help catch mice around your house, and the cat ends up being lazy and doing nothing. It defeats the purpose of why you bought that cat.
Well, God made us glorify him, and it does not matter if you like that purpose or not. The same way that a baby cannot tell its parents that it does not want to be born. You cannot tell your master that you don’t like your purpose.

We Build All of Our Treasure Here on Earth

The problem is that humans get caught up in this world instead of living for God. Everything becomes about you instead of thinking through how you can bring him, Glory. The verse below puts it in context. You need to put your treasures in heaven and focus on the day you will get to be with God again.
Matthew 6:18-24  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,  but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.

“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. Therefore, you cannot serve God and money!”

Why is The Call to Boast in Christ

One of the best things you can do is Boast in Christ. We are allowed to do this because it brings honor to God. If he is greater than I, you have to recognize that God is faithful, loving, just, righteous, and the creator of the universe.

We Boast in Chris because Jesus died for us. He humbled himself and left the right hand of God and sacrificed his perfect life here on earth so that we could have salvation and be reconciled to God (Philippians 2).

If Jesus did not do what he did, we would have to meet the entire law perfectly to be saved. The Old Testament proves over and over again that we are incapable of doing that. Jesus did not abolish the law, but he fulfilled the entire thing (Matthew 5).

Since Jesus fulfilled the Law, all who believe in him get to fulfill the law as a gift. Why? Because Christians become covered in the blood of Jesus. We get presented to God like Jesus; he does not see our sinful ways.
