Breakdown of 1 Corinthians 13*4-7
This is one of the most popular verses used at weddings. A lot of the time the full context is not taken into account. In previous chapters of 1 Corinthians, Paul is speaking to the church about spiritual gifts and how they are to be used. When he gets to chapter 13 the focus moves to how gifts are not more important than love. This mirrors Matthew 5:23-25:
23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison.
Love is the most important thing! We need to love God over everything else and we need to love our neighbors and gifts do not supersede these things. The verses talk about powerful gifts like prophecy, and giving and how without love tye meaning nothing. Then it sets a standard for what love really is. No where does it talk about how love is a feeling. Instead, it mentions:
